Barbell Bent-Over Row
The barbell bent-over row is a hinged horizontal pull that builds your upper back and lats, with biceps and traps assisting. You hold a fixed torso angle and row the bar from hanging arms to your belly each rep, making it a staple for back thickness and a natural partner to pressing.

Weekly sets for back
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for back, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the barbell bent-over row
- 01Deadlift the bar to standing, then grip it just outside shoulder width with palms facing you.
- 02Hinge at the hips with soft knees until your torso sits around 30 to 45 degrees above horizontal.
- 03Brace your trunk and let the bar hang under your shoulders with your arms straight.
- 04Row the bar to your lower ribs or upper belly, driving your elbows back past your torso.
- 05Lower under control to full arm extension while holding the same torso angle.
Coaching cues
- Pull your elbows toward your back pockets.
- Hold your torso still as a statue.
- Squeeze your shoulder blades at the top.
Common mistakes
- Standing up a little more each rep turns the row into a shrug, so keep the torso angle fixed and reduce the load.
- Jerking the bar up with your hips adds momentum, so start each rep from a still body and pull with your back.
- Rounding your lower back under load is a common breakdown, so brace hard and lighten the bar when it happens.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
