Cable Overhead Tricep Extension
The cable overhead tricep extension is an arm isolation exercise where you face away from the stack and extend a rope forward and up from behind your head. With your arms overhead, the long head of the triceps works in a stretched position, which research links to strong growth. Pair it with pushdowns for complete triceps training.

Weekly sets for triceps
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for triceps, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the cable overhead tricep extension
- 01Set the pulley at about hip or chest height and attach a rope.
- 02Grab the rope, turn away from the stack and lift your hands over your head with elbows bent.
- 03Step forward into a split stance and lean slightly so the cable runs over your shoulders.
- 04Point your elbows forward and extend your arms until they are straight in front of and above your head.
- 05Bend your elbows slowly to let the rope travel back behind your head for a deep stretch.
Coaching cues
- Elbows point forward, not out
- Reach deep behind your head
- Upper arms stay beside your ears
Common mistakes
- Letting your elbows flare wide reduces the triceps stretch, so keep them roughly shoulder width and pointing forward.
- Moving your upper arms as you extend turns it into a pullover, so fix your upper arms and move only at the elbow.
- Arching your lower back under a heavy stack loses position, so brace your abs and take a longer split stance.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
