Cable Crunch
The cable crunch is a kneeling ab exercise where you hold a rope from a high pulley beside your head and curl your torso down toward your thighs. It trains the abs, mainly the rectus abdominis, against a load you can increase steadily. Pick it over bodyweight crunches when you want to train your abs like any other muscle.

The cable crunch trains the abs.

Weekly sets for abs
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for abs, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the cable crunch
- 01Set the pulley at the top position and attach a rope.
- 02Kneel a short step in front of the stack and hold the rope ends beside your ears or forehead.
- 03Sit your hips back slightly and keep them fixed in that position for the whole set.
- 04Curl your spine down, bringing your ribs toward your pelvis and your elbows toward your thighs.
- 05Squeeze your abs at the bottom, then uncurl slowly back up until you feel a stretch in your stomach.
Coaching cues
- Ribs to hips
- Round your spine, don't hinge your hips
- Hands stay locked by your head
Common mistakes
- Sitting your hips back and down to move the weight turns it into a hip hinge, so keep your hips still and curl your spine.
- Pulling the rope down with your arms takes the abs out of it, so lock your hands beside your head.
- Rushing the rise skips the stretched part of the rep, so uncurl slowly until your torso is upright.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
