Cable Russian Twist

The cable Russian twist is a rotational core exercise where you rotate a handle from a mid-height pulley across your body, standing or seated. It trains the obliques, with the abs assisting. The cable gives sideways resistance that a plate twist on the floor cannot, so it suits lifters who want loadable rotation work.

How to do the cable russian twist

  1. 01Set the pulley at about chest height and attach a single D-handle.
  2. 02Sit on a bench or the floor side-on to the stack, or stand with knees soft.
  3. 03Hold the handle with both hands at arm's length in front of your chest and turn toward the stack.
  4. 04Rotate your torso away from the stack, keeping your arms straight and your hips facing forward.
  5. 05Pause at the end of the turn, then rotate back toward the stack slowly.

Coaching cues

  • Hands stay in front of your sternum
  • Turn your shoulders, not your hips
  • Slow turns, steady breathing

Common mistakes

  • Swinging your arms past your body instead of rotating your trunk wastes the effort, so keep your hands centred on your chest.
  • Letting your hips turn with your shoulders removes the twist, so keep your hips square and still.
  • Using a fast, jerky tempo adds momentum, so rotate at a controlled pace and pause at each end.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.

The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
