Machine Torso Rotation

The machine torso rotation is a seated twist where you rotate your upper body against a weighted lever while your hips stay fixed. It trains the obliques, with the abs assisting. Use it to load rotation directly, which cable woodchops and planks only partly cover.

Weekly sets for obliques

Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for obliques, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.

How to do the machine torso rotation

  1. 01Set the start position so you begin turned slightly to one side, with a comfortable stretch.
  2. 02Sit with your hips facing forward and your legs locked against the pads.
  3. 03Place your arms or chest against the pads and grab the handles.
  4. 04Rotate your torso to the opposite side using your trunk, not your arms.
  5. 05Return slowly to the start, finish all reps, then switch sides.

Coaching cues

  • Hips stay forward
  • Rotate from the ribs
  • Slow and smooth both ways

Common mistakes

  • Twisting fast with momentum takes tension off the obliques, so rotate slowly and pause at the end.
  • Letting your hips turn with your torso spreads the work around, so lock your legs in place.
  • Starting at an extreme twist can strain the spine, so set a start position you control comfortably.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.

The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
