Barbell Front Squat

The barbell front squat holds the bar across the front of your shoulders, forcing a more upright torso and letting your knees travel further forward. That shifts work toward your quads, with glutes and abs heavily involved. Pick it to build quads and trunk strength with less lower-back load than a back squat.

How to do the barbell front squat

  1. 01Rest the bar on your front delts against your throat, using a clean grip or crossed arms.
  2. 02Lift your elbows high so your upper arms point forward and the bar sits securely.
  3. 03Set your feet shoulder width, toes slightly out, and take a deep breath to brace.
  4. 04Squat straight down between your heels, keeping your torso upright and elbows high.
  5. 05Drive up through your midfoot, leading with your elbows so the bar doesn't roll forward.

Coaching cues

  • Elbows up, chest proud.
  • Sit straight down between your heels.
  • Brace like a pillar.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping your elbows lets the bar roll forward, so drive them up hard, especially out of the bottom.
  • Death-gripping the bar with stiff wrists makes the rack position fight you, so hold it with your fingertips or cross your arms.
  • Rounding your upper back under the bar drops your chest, so brace hard and pick a load you can hold upright.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.

The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
