Barbell Glute Bridge

The barbell glute bridge is a hip extension done lying on the floor with a bar over your hips. It isolates your glutes, with hamstrings assisting, through a shorter range than the hip thrust. Choose it when you have no bench, want a quicker setup, or want glute work focused on the top of the movement.

How to do the barbell glute bridge

  1. 01Lie on your back and roll a padded barbell over your hips, holding it in place with both hands.
  2. 02Bend your knees and plant your feet flat, hip width apart, heels a hand's length from your glutes.
  3. 03Brace your trunk and drive through your heels to lift your hips off the floor.
  4. 04Rise until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees, squeezing your glutes.
  5. 05Lower your hips to just above the floor under control and repeat.

Coaching cues

  • Drive your heels into the floor.
  • Squeeze your glutes like you mean it.
  • Ribs down, no low-back arch.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing up with your lower back instead of your hips makes you arch, so tilt your pelvis under and squeeze your glutes.
  • Letting your knees fall inward reduces glute tension, so push them out in line with your feet.
  • Bouncing your hips off the floor removes tension, so pause briefly at the top and lower under control.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.

The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
