Cable Hip Abduction
The cable hip abduction is a standing exercise where you lift one leg out to the side against a low cable attached to your ankle. It trains the glutes, mainly the glute medius, with the hip flexors assisting. Use it to strengthen the side of your hips for better knee tracking and more stable single-leg work.

Weekly sets for glutes
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for glutes, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the cable hip abduction
- 01Set the pulley at the lowest position and attach an ankle strap.
- 02Wrap the strap around the ankle farthest from the stack and stand side-on to it.
- 03Hold the frame with your near hand and stand tall on your inside leg with a soft knee.
- 04Lift your working leg out to the side, toes pointing forward, until you feel the side of your hip contract.
- 05Lower your leg slowly back across toward your standing foot without letting the stack rest.
Coaching cues
- Lead with the heel, toes forward
- Stay tall, no side lean
- Small range, big squeeze
Common mistakes
- Leaning your torso away from the stack to lift higher hides weak glutes, so keep your torso upright and accept a smaller range.
- Turning your toes up toward the ceiling shifts work to the hip flexors, so keep your foot pointing forward or slightly down.
- Swinging the leg out fast skips the hard part of the rep, so lift with control and pause at the top.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
