Barbell Wrist Curl

The barbell wrist curl is a small isolation exercise where you curl a bar using only your wrists, palms facing up. It trains your forearm flexors, the muscles on the palm side of your forearm, which support grip and forearm size. Pick it as a finisher when your grip or forearms are a weak link.

How to do the barbell wrist curl

  1. 01Sit on a bench and rest your forearms on your thighs, palms facing up.
  2. 02Hold the bar underhand with hands about shoulder width and wrists just past your knees.
  3. 03Let the bar roll down toward your fingertips and lower your wrists into a stretch.
  4. 04Curl the bar back up by flexing your wrists as high as they go.
  5. 05Squeeze at the top, then lower slowly into the next rep.

Coaching cues

  • Forearms stay glued to your thighs.
  • Let the bar roll to your fingertips.
  • Move only at the wrist.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting your forearms off your thighs brings your biceps into it, so keep them pinned down.
  • Bouncing the bar with fast reps limits forearm tension, so move slowly through the full range.
  • Using too much weight cuts the range short, so drop the load until you reach a full stretch and full curl.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
