Calf Raises
The calf raise is a standing exercise where you rise onto the balls of your feet and lower back down. It trains your calves, mainly the gastrocnemius when your knees are straight. Do it on a step edge for a deeper stretch and more growth. Single-leg reps and long pauses at the bottom make it harder.

Weekly sets for calves
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for calves, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the calf raises
- 01Stand with the balls of your feet on a step edge, heels hanging off, and lightly hold a wall for balance.
- 02Keep your knees straight but not locked and your body tall.
- 03Lower your heels slowly below the step until you feel a deep calf stretch, and pause there briefly.
- 04Push through the balls of your feet to rise as high as you can onto your toes.
- 05Squeeze at the top for a second, then lower slowly back into the stretch.
Coaching cues
- Pause in the deep stretch
- Rise as high as possible
- Push through your big toe
Common mistakes
- Bouncing quick reps uses the springy Achilles tendon instead of the muscle; pause at the bottom and top of every rep.
- Doing half reps on flat ground cuts the stretch that drives growth; use a step so your heels can drop.
- Rolling onto your little toes at the top shifts the load sideways; keep pressure through your big toe.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Once the top of the range is easy, Swole.fit suggests a harder variation or added load.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
