Seated Calf Raise Machine
The seated calf raise machine has you sit with a pad on your thighs and raise your heels from a step. Bent knees slacken the gastrocnemius, so it focuses on the soleus, the deeper calf muscle. Pair it with standing raises to train the whole calf.

Weekly sets for calves
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for calves, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the seated calf raise machine
- 01Sit and place the balls of your feet on the step with the thigh pad resting just above your knees.
- 02Adjust the pad height so it presses snugly on your thighs when your heels are level.
- 03Lift slightly, release the safety lever, and lower your heels into a deep stretch.
- 04Push up onto your toes as high as you can.
- 05Hold the top briefly, then lower slowly back to the bottom stretch.
- 06Re-engage the safety lever before you step off.
Coaching cues
- Deep stretch, short pause
- Push through the big toe
- Slow and controlled, no bouncing
Common mistakes
- Bouncing in the bottom position removes tension, so pause at the stretch before every rep.
- Setting the pad too loose lets the weight shift off your thighs, so lower it until it sits snug.
- Rolling onto your little toes can shift load unevenly, so press evenly with the big toe side.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
