Dumbbell Single-Leg Calf Raise
The dumbbell single-leg calf raise is a calf raise done on one foot, holding a dumbbell on the working side. It trains the calves with roughly double the load per leg of the two-leg version. Pick it when your calves outgrow the dumbbells you have or when one leg lags behind.

Weekly sets for calves
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for calves, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the dumbbell single-leg calf raise
- 01Stand on a step on the ball of one foot, heel hanging off, holding a dumbbell in the same-side hand.
- 02Hold a rail or wall with your free hand and hook your other foot behind your working ankle.
- 03Lower your heel slowly until your calf is fully stretched.
- 04Pause, then rise as high as you can onto your toes.
- 05Finish your reps, then switch legs and match the rep count.
Coaching cues
- Hold on for balance only
- Full stretch, full rise
- Slow lowering, steady rhythm
Common mistakes
- Pulling on the rail to help you up cheats the calf, so use your hand for balance only.
- Rushing through bouncy reps wastes the stretch, so pause a second at the bottom.
- Doing more reps on your stronger leg widens the gap, so start with the weaker side and match reps.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
