Standing Calf Raise Machine

The standing calf raise machine has you stand under shoulder pads with the balls of your feet on a step and rise onto your toes. With straight knees it trains both calf heads, especially the gastrocnemius. It is the go-to for heavy, full-range calf work.

How to do the standing calf raise machine

  1. 01Set the shoulder pads so you stand fully upright with a slight bend in your knees under load.
  2. 02Place the balls of your feet on the edge of the step, hip width apart.
  3. 03Lower your heels as far as you comfortably can and pause in the deep stretch.
  4. 04Rise onto your toes as high as possible, pushing through the big toe.
  5. 05Hold the top for a moment, then lower slowly back into the stretch.

Coaching cues

  • Pause in the bottom stretch
  • Tall on your toes
  • Knees stay nearly straight

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing out of the bottom uses tendon stretch instead of muscle, so pause one to two seconds at the deepest point.
  • Bending your knees to push the weight turns it into a leg press, so keep them almost locked.
  • Doing half reps at the top leaves gains behind, so use the full range from deep stretch to full rise.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.

The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
