Barbell Incline Press

The barbell incline press is a bench press on a bench set to roughly 30 to 45 degrees, which shifts more work to your upper chest and front shoulders, with your triceps assisting. Choose it when your upper chest lags or you want a pressing angle between the flat bench and the overhead press.

How to do the barbell incline press

  1. 01Set the bench to 30 to 45 degrees and sit back so the bar hangs just above your eyes.
  2. 02Grip slightly wider than shoulder width, squeeze your shoulder blades together and plant your feet.
  3. 03Unrack and move the bar until it sits directly over your upper chest and shoulders.
  4. 04Brace and lower the bar to your upper chest, just below the collarbones, keeping your forearms vertical.
  5. 05Press straight up over your shoulders to lockout without letting your shoulder blades roll forward.

Coaching cues

  • Touch high on the chest, below the collarbones.
  • Keep your chest lifted toward the bar.
  • Stay pinned to the bench pad.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the bench too steep turns the lift into a shoulder press, so keep the angle at 45 degrees or lower.
  • Lowering the bar to mid-chest like a flat bench pushes it out of line, so aim for the upper chest instead.
  • Arching hard enough to flatten the incline cancels the angle, so keep a moderate arch and your hips on the seat.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
