Machine Incline Chest Press

The machine incline chest press is a seated press that drives the handles up and forward at an angle. It biases the upper, clavicular chest, with the front delts and triceps assisting. Use it to build the upper shelf of your chest with a stable path and easy loading.

How to do the machine incline chest press

  1. 01Adjust the seat so the handles start level with your upper chest, just below your collarbones.
  2. 02Sit back with your chest up, shoulder blades retracted, and feet flat on the floor or footrests.
  3. 03Take a grip that keeps your forearms vertical when viewed from the side.
  4. 04Press up and forward along the machine's path until your elbows are almost locked.
  5. 05Lower slowly until your upper chest is stretched and your elbows sit just behind your torso.

Coaching cues

  • Chest tall, collarbones toward the handles
  • Elbows slightly tucked, not flared wide
  • Drive up through the heel of your palm

Common mistakes

  • Arching hard off the pad turns the incline into a flat press, so keep your upper back in contact throughout.
  • Flaring your elbows straight out to the sides loads the front delts more than the chest, so tuck them a little.
  • Shrugging your shoulders toward your ears as you press shifts work to the traps, so keep them low and back.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.

The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
