Machine Chest Press
The machine chest press is a seated horizontal press on a fixed path. It works your chest hardest, with the triceps and front delts helping. Pick it over the bench press when you want to push close to failure without a spotter or a bar balancing act.
Muscles worked
The machine chest press trains the chest, with triceps, shoulders helping.
Weekly sets for chest
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for chest, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the machine chest press
- 01Set the seat so the handles line up with your mid chest, not your neck or belly.
- 02Sit with your back flat on the pad, feet planted, and shoulder blades pulled back and down.
- 03Grip the handles with your wrists stacked over your forearms and elbows about 45 degrees from your torso.
- 04Press the handles forward until your arms are nearly straight, keeping your shoulders pinned to the pad.
- 05Return under control until you feel a deep stretch across your chest, then press again.
Coaching cues
- Shoulder blades stay glued to the pad
- Push yourself away from the handles
- Slow on the way back
Common mistakes
- Setting the seat too low puts the handles near your neck and shifts load to the shoulders, so raise it to mid chest.
- Letting your shoulders roll forward at lockout steals tension from the chest, so finish with your upper back still on the pad.
- Cutting the range short at the stretch wastes the best part of the rep, so let the handles come back until your chest is fully lengthened.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
