Dumbbell Step-Up

The dumbbell step-up is a single-leg exercise where you step onto a box or bench while holding dumbbells at your sides. It trains the quads and glutes, with the hamstrings and calves helping. It's simple to learn and carries over well to stairs, hiking and sport.

How to do the dumbbell step-up

  1. 01Stand facing a box or bench around knee height, holding dumbbells at your sides.
  2. 02Place your whole working foot on the box with your knee over your middle toes.
  3. 03Lean slightly forward and drive through the heel of the top foot to stand up on the box.
  4. 04Bring the trailing foot up to meet it, then step down with control using the same working leg.
  5. 05Finish all reps on one leg before switching.

Coaching cues

  • Whole foot on the box
  • Push from the top leg
  • Step down slow

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing off the bottom foot does the work for you, so keep the trailing toes light and push with the top leg.
  • Using a box that's too tall forces a rounded back and hip hike, so start around knee height.
  • Dropping off the box quickly skips the lowering work, so step down slowly under control.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
