Dumbbell Walking Lunge

The dumbbell walking lunge is a continuous lunge where each step carries you forward instead of returning to the start. It trains the quads and glutes, with the hamstrings and calves assisting. Choose it for big leg volume and some conditioning in one go when you have room to travel.

How to do the dumbbell walking lunge

  1. 01Stand at one end of a clear path holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. 02Step forward into a lunge and lower until your back knee hovers just above the floor.
  3. 03Drive through your front heel and bring your back foot forward to step straight into the next lunge.
  4. 04Keep your torso upright and your feet hip width apart as you travel.
  5. 05Count each step as one rep, or one rep per pair of steps, and stay consistent between sessions.

Coaching cues

  • Stand tall between steps
  • Front foot flat and heavy
  • Smooth rhythm, no stumble

Common mistakes

  • Rushing through steps turns it into a stagger, so pause briefly at the top of each step to reset balance.
  • Leaning far forward to keep momentum shifts work away from the quads, so keep your chest up.
  • Letting the step length shrink as you tire limits depth, so keep each stride long enough to reach the floor.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
