Kettlebell Snatch

The kettlebell snatch takes the bell from between your legs to overhead lockout in one explosive motion. It hits your shoulders and upper back, with abs and glutes powering the hip drive. Choose it for power and conditioning once your swing is solid, since it is the most technical bell lift.

How to do the kettlebell snatch

  1. 01Set the bell slightly in front of you, hinge and grip it with one hand.
  2. 02Hike the bell back between your legs, then drive your hips forward explosively.
  3. 03As the bell rises, pull your elbow up and back to keep it close to your body.
  4. 04Punch your hand through the handle at the top so the bell rolls softly onto your forearm.
  5. 05Lock out overhead, then drop the bell back into the swing path and hinge for the next rep.

Coaching cues

  • Hips first, then the high pull
  • Punch through, don't flip it over
  • Soft landing on the forearm

Common mistakes

  • Letting the bell arc wide makes it slam your forearm, so keep the elbow high and the bell close as it rises.
  • Muscling it up with your arm tires your shoulder fast, so let a hard hip snap create the speed.
  • Gripping the handle too tightly at the top tears your hands, so loosen the grip and punch through at lockout.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
