Barbell Overhead Press

The barbell overhead press is a standing press that moves the bar from your front shoulders to locked out overhead. It builds your shoulders and triceps while your abs and trunk work hard to keep you upright. Pick it as your main vertical press for shoulder strength and overhead stability.

How to do the barbell overhead press

  1. 01Set the bar at upper chest height and grip it just outside shoulder width with forearms vertical.
  2. 02Unrack with the bar resting on your front shoulders, feet hip width, glutes and abs squeezed.
  3. 03Breathe in, brace, and pull your head back slightly so the bar can travel straight up.
  4. 04Press the bar vertically past your face, then move your head through once the bar clears your forehead.
  5. 05Lock out with the bar over your midfoot and biceps near your ears, then lower to your shoulders under control.

Coaching cues

  • Squeeze your glutes to stay stacked.
  • Head through the window at the top.
  • Bar path stays vertical over midfoot.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back excessively turns it into a standing incline press, so squeeze your glutes and keep your ribs down.
  • Pressing the bar out in front of your face makes it heavier, so pull your chin back and press straight up.
  • Flaring your elbows wide at the start leaks power, so keep your forearms vertical and elbows slightly ahead of the bar.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
