Barbell Military Press
The barbell military press is the strictest version of the overhead press, done standing with your heels together and zero leg drive. It trains your shoulders and triceps, and the narrow stance makes your abs and trunk work harder for balance. Pick it when you want to expose and build pure pressing strength.
Muscles worked
The barbell military press trains the shoulders, with triceps, abs helping.
Weekly sets for shoulders
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for shoulders, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the barbell military press
- 01Grip the bar at shoulder width with the bar on your front shoulders and elbows slightly forward.
- 02Stand with your heels together, toes turned out slightly, and lock your knees.
- 03Squeeze your glutes, quads and abs hard so your body becomes one rigid column.
- 04Press the bar straight up past your face and lock out overhead, moving your head through at the top.
- 05Lower under control to your shoulders without letting your knees bend or your hips shift.
Coaching cues
- Heels together, knees locked.
- Brace like someone is about to shove you.
- No dip, no drive, just shoulders.
Common mistakes
- Bending your knees for a small dip turns it into a push press, so keep your legs locked for the whole set.
- Swaying side to side on the narrow stance wastes force, so squeeze your glutes and brace harder before each rep.
- Leaning back to grind out heavy reps shifts load onto your lower back, so end the set when you can't press upright.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
