Cable Shoulder Press
The cable shoulder press is an overhead press where you push two handles from low pulleys up from shoulder height, standing or seated. It trains the front and side shoulders, with the triceps assisting. Cables let each arm find its own path and keep tension at lockout, so it suits lifters who find barbell pressing uncomfortable.

Weekly sets for shoulders
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for shoulders, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the cable shoulder press
- 01Set both pulleys at the lowest position and place a bench or stand in the middle.
- 02Grab a D-handle in each hand and bring them up to shoulder height with palms facing forward.
- 03Sit or stand tall, brace your midsection and keep your elbows slightly in front of your torso.
- 04Press the handles straight up until your arms are extended overhead and your hands nearly meet.
- 05Lower the handles slowly back to shoulder height without letting the stacks touch down.
Coaching cues
- Press up and slightly in
- Ribs down, glutes tight
- Elbows under the handles
Common mistakes
- Leaning back into a big arch turns it into an incline press, so squeeze your glutes and keep ribs stacked over hips.
- Letting the handles drift wide of your elbows loses force, so keep your forearms vertical under the handles.
- Cutting the bottom short skips the hardest part, so lower the handles to at least ear height every rep.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
