Barbell Push Press

The barbell push press is an overhead press that starts with a short knee dip and an explosive leg drive, then your shoulders and triceps finish the lockout. Your quads supply the launch. Choose it to handle heavier loads overhead, train power, or push past a strict press sticking point.

How to do the barbell push press

  1. 01Hold the bar on your front shoulders with a grip just outside shoulder width and feet hip width apart.
  2. 02Brace your trunk and dip a short distance by bending your knees, keeping your torso vertical.
  3. 03Reverse the dip immediately and drive hard through your legs to launch the bar upward.
  4. 04Ride that momentum and press the bar to lockout overhead, moving your head through.
  5. 05Lower the bar under control to your shoulders, absorbing it with slightly soft knees.

Coaching cues

  • Dip straight down, drive straight up.
  • Fast dip, no pause at the bottom.
  • Punch the bar through to lockout.

Common mistakes

  • Dipping too deep or pausing at the bottom kills the stretch reflex, so keep the dip short and reverse it immediately.
  • Letting your chest fall forward in the dip throws the bar out front, so keep your torso upright and weight on midfoot.
  • Pressing with your arms before your legs finish driving wastes the leg power, so extend your knees fully first.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.

The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
