Kettlebell Clean and Press
The kettlebell clean and press brings the bell from between your legs to the rack position, then presses it overhead. Your shoulders do the pressing while your abs and triceps support the lockout. Choose it for single-arm overhead strength that also teaches your hips to deliver the weight.
Muscles worked
The kettlebell clean and press trains the shoulders, with abs, triceps helping.
Weekly sets for shoulders
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for shoulders, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the kettlebell clean and press
- 01Stand over the bell, hinge and grip it with one hand, then hike it back between your legs.
- 02Drive your hips forward and pull the bell close to your body, guiding it into the rack position.
- 03Let the bell rest on your forearm with your wrist straight and elbow tucked against your ribs.
- 04Brace your abs and squeeze your glutes, then press the bell straight up until your elbow locks.
- 05Lower it back to the rack, drop it between your legs in a controlled hinge and repeat.
Coaching cues
- Zip it up close to your body
- Corkscrew the hand around the handle
- Glutes tight, press to the ceiling
Common mistakes
- Swinging the bell wide on the clean makes it crash onto your forearm, so keep the path tight and close to your torso.
- Bending back during the press shifts load into the lower back, so brace your trunk and keep ribs stacked over hips.
- Pressing from a loose rack wastes force, so set a firm rack with the elbow tucked before every press.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
