Machine Bicep Curl

The machine bicep curl is a seated curl where you bend your elbows against a lever with your arms resting on a pad. It isolates the biceps. The fixed path and constant resistance keep tension through the whole range, so you can push the biceps hard without swinging your body.

How to do the machine bicep curl

  1. 01Set the seat so your elbows line up with the machine's pivot point.
  2. 02Rest your upper arms flat on the pad and grab the handles with an underhand grip.
  3. 03Start with your arms nearly straight and your shoulders relaxed.
  4. 04Curl the handles up until your biceps are fully contracted.
  5. 05Lower slowly until your elbows are almost straight, then repeat.

Coaching cues

  • Elbows fixed on the pad
  • Squeeze hard at the top
  • Lower for a slow count of three

Common mistakes

  • Lifting your elbows off the pad lets the shoulders help, so keep your upper arms planted for the whole set.
  • Stopping short of full extension skips the stretched part of the curl, so let your arms nearly straighten.
  • Misaligning the elbow and pivot makes the curl feel jerky, so adjust the seat until they match.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
