How to do the barbell drag curl

  1. 01Stand tall holding the bar underhand at shoulder width, arms straight against your thighs.
  2. 02Brace your trunk and keep the bar in contact with your body throughout.
  3. 03Curl by pulling your elbows back behind you as the bar slides up your torso.
  4. 04Stop when the bar reaches your lower chest and squeeze your biceps.
  5. 05Slide the bar back down your body under control to full arm extension.

Coaching cues

  • Drag the bar up your shirt.
  • Elbows travel back, not forward.
  • Squeeze hard at the top.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the bar swing away from your body turns it into a normal curl, so keep it in contact the whole rep.
  • Shrugging your shoulders up to move the bar takes work off the biceps, so keep them down and relaxed.
  • Going too heavy makes you lean back to finish reps, so pick a load you can drag with a still torso.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
