Barbell Curl

The barbell curl is the classic elbow flexion exercise, curling a bar from your thighs to your shoulders with palms facing up. It trains your biceps directly and lets you load both arms together heavier than most curl variations. Pick it as your main biceps builder and an easy way to track arm strength.

How to do the barbell curl

  1. 01Stand tall with the bar in an underhand grip, hands about shoulder width apart.
  2. 02Pin your elbows at your sides and let your arms hang fully extended.
  3. 03Curl the bar up in an arc toward your shoulders while your elbows stay close to your sides.
  4. 04Squeeze your biceps hard at the top for a moment.
  5. 05Lower the bar slowly until your arms are fully straight again.

Coaching cues

  • Elbows stay pinned to your sides.
  • Lower slower than you lift.
  • Keep your torso dead still.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the bar up with your hips and back cheats your biceps, so lower the weight and stand still.
  • Cutting the bottom of the rep short skips the stretch, so straighten your arms fully every time.
  • Letting your elbows drift far forward turns it into a front raise, so keep them near your sides.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
