Smith Machine Incline Press

The Smith machine incline press is an incline bench press on fixed rails. It targets the upper chest, with the front delts and triceps assisting. Choose it over a free-bar incline when you want a stable, repeatable path to load the upper chest hard without needing a spotter.

How to do the smith machine incline press

  1. 01Set an adjustable bench to about 30 degrees and place it so the bar lowers to your upper chest.
  2. 02Lie back with your feet planted, chest up, and shoulder blades pulled down and together.
  3. 03Grip just outside shoulder width and unrack by twisting the bar off the hooks.
  4. 04Lower the bar to just below your collarbones while keeping your forearms close to vertical.
  5. 05Press straight up until your elbows are nearly locked, keeping your upper back tight on the bench.
  6. 06Set the safety stops just above your chest before you start working sets.

Coaching cues

  • Low incline, about 30 degrees
  • Bar to collarbones, not chin
  • Keep the chest proud the whole set

Common mistakes

  • Setting the bench too steep turns the lift into a shoulder press, so keep the incline around 30 degrees.
  • Lining the bench up wrong makes the bar track toward your face or belly, so test the path with an empty bar first.
  • Letting your shoulder blades drift apart at lockout loses chest tension, so finish each rep with your back still pinned.

How Swole.fit programs it

Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.

  • Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
  • Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
  • Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
  • Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
