Dumbbell Incline Fly
The dumbbell incline fly is a fly done on a bench set to about 30 degrees. It isolates the chest with extra emphasis on the upper pecs, under a strong stretch. Choose it over the flat fly when your upper chest needs more attention or to vary the angle within a chest day.

How to do the dumbbell incline fly
- 01Set a bench to around 30 degrees and lie back with the dumbbells held over your upper chest, palms facing each other.
- 02Keep a slight bend in your elbows and your shoulder blades pulled back against the pad.
- 03Lower the dumbbells out and slightly down in a wide arc until your chest is fully stretched.
- 04Pause briefly at the bottom, then bring the dumbbells back up and together over your upper chest.
- 05Stop just short of the dumbbells touching to keep tension on your pecs.
Coaching cues
- Arc out, not down
- Lead with your elbows on the way up
- Keep your chest high
Common mistakes
- Setting the bench too steep pulls in the front delts, so stay near 30 degrees for an upper chest focus.
- Letting your shoulders roll forward at the top loses the chest squeeze, so keep your shoulder blades pinned throughout.
- Rushing the lowering phase wastes the best part of the lift, so take two to three seconds to reach the stretch.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
