Machine Chest Fly
The machine chest fly is a seated fly using long handles that swing in an arc, usually gripped by hand rather than braced on the forearms. It isolates the chest through a long range. Pick it over the pec deck when you prefer holding handles or want more freedom at the wrist.
Muscles worked
The machine chest fly trains the chest.

Weekly sets for chest
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for chest, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the machine chest fly
- 01Set the seat so the handles are at mid chest height when your arms are out to the sides.
- 02Set the range so the starting position gives a deep chest stretch without pulling your shoulders forward.
- 03Grab the handles with a soft bend in your elbows and keep that bend fixed for the whole set.
- 04Sweep the handles together in a wide arc until your hands meet in front of your chest.
- 05Return along the same arc with control until your chest is fully lengthened.
Coaching cues
- Lock the elbow angle, move only at the shoulder
- Wide arc, not a press
- Pause briefly when the hands meet
Common mistakes
- Bending and straightening your elbows turns the fly into a press, so freeze the elbow angle and move at the shoulder.
- Gripping the handles too hard lets your forearms fatigue first, so hold them firmly but lightly with relaxed fingers.
- Letting the stack yank you open at the bottom loses control of the stretch, so slow the last part of every eccentric.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers isolation work toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
