Machine Shoulder Press
The machine shoulder press is a seated overhead press on a fixed path. It works the front and side delts, with the triceps assisting. The back pad and guided handles remove balance and lower back demands, so you can take your shoulders close to failure safely without a spotter.
Muscles worked
The machine shoulder press trains the shoulders, with triceps helping.
Weekly sets for shoulders
Hard sets per week that Swole.fit plans for shoulders, counting every exercise that trains it. Start a cycle near the growth line and climb toward the recovery limit before a deload.
How to do the machine shoulder press
- 01Set the seat so the handles start around chin or ear height.
- 02Sit with your back flat on the pad and feet planted wide for stability.
- 03Grip the handles with your wrists stacked over your elbows.
- 04Press the handles overhead until your arms are nearly straight without locking hard.
- 05Lower under control until your hands are back at ear height, then press again.
Coaching cues
- Back stays on the pad
- Press up, not forward
- Ribs down, glutes squeezed
Common mistakes
- Arching your lower back off the pad turns it into an incline press, so brace your core and keep your back flat.
- Setting the seat too high cuts the bottom of the range, so lower it until the handles start near your ears.
- Flaring your elbows far behind your body strains the front of the shoulder, so keep them slightly in front of your torso.
How Swole.fit programs it
Log it once and the app plans the next session for you.
- Most sets land between 8 and 15 reps, the range the plan steers compound lifts toward for size.
- Week one starts around 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Each week you train a little closer to failure, ending around 0 to 1 in reserve before a deload week.
- Hit the top of the range on every set and the next session adds the smallest real jump in weight, rounded to the plates, dumbbells or stack you actually have.
- Sets for this exercise count toward your weekly volume for every muscle it trains: a full set for the primary muscles, half a set for the helpers.
The full method, with the maths, is in how mesocycles work.
